What a beautiful way to tell someone with chronic pain, “I understand”, “I hear you”, “I’m here for you”, and “I love you”.
One of the most challenging parts of having a chronic illness is the feeling of being alone and knowing that the people around you don’t understand you or what you have to deal with every day of your life. It’s isolating. When you feel others are judging you because “You don’t look sick”, or you are just “being dramatic”, it drives one to hide what they are feeling and turn inward. This is a social rejection, and because pain processing and social rejection are processed in the same part of the brain, this rejection actually fuels the fire and causes more pain.
Let them know you are there for them, even if you don’t totally understand the depths of their pain; you want to be there for them. It means the world to a Chronic Pain Warrior!
